THE STATES OF THE EARTH by Mohamed Amer Meziane | Verso Books
If modernity is the Anthropocene, and modernity is the product of secularization, then what is the connection between secularization and the climate crisis?
Far from a defense of religion, THE STATES OF THE EARTH argues that phenomena such as evangelism and political Islam are best understood as products of empire and secularization. In a world where material technology was considered divine, religious and secular forces both tried to achieve Heaven on Earth by destroying Earth itself.
The States of the Earth by Mohamed Amer Meziane is out now! www.versobooks.com/products/3050-the-states-of-the-earth?
"Meziane, in his recently published book, argues that Europe, and France specifically, give themselves credit for having modernized during the 19th century. But this was the period of France's imperial adventures in the Muslim world, which - not coincidentally, he powerfully argues - racialized the concept of "religiosity," rendering it "uncivilized."" - The New York Times
"An extremely important and erudite book. Extraordinary in many parts, it will be discussed for a long time to come and is destined to generate new debates. It will be difficult from now on to think without some of the main concepts it invents, such as imperiality, which disrupts the way we write the history of modern political regimes. It is impressive in its erudition, in its knowledge - it is the result of a considerable amount of work - and also in its impetus, strength and commitment." - Étienne Balibar

Jason Read and Jeremy Gilbert on Marx, Spinoza, Work, and Breaking Bad
Переглядів 7 тис.3 місяці тому
Even as the rewards of work decline and its demands on us increase, many people double-down on their commitment to wage slavery-working harder, doing overtime, and learning to hustle. To paraphrase Spinoza, why do people fight to be exploited as if it were liberation? Jason Read's book - The Double Shift - turns to the intersection of Marx and Spinoza and examines contemporary ideologies and th...

What is AI? A dominant view describes it as the quest "to solve intelligence"-a solution supposedly to be found in the secret logic of the mind, such as in its complex neural networks. Matteo Pasquinelli argues, to the contrary, that the inner code of AI is shaped not by the imitation of biological intelligence, but the intelligence of labour and social relations. Here he is interviewed by Rich...

While i'm no communist we can learn from lenin who said "you must work and struggle alongside the labour/reformists to show them how opportinistic double dealing with the right wing elite damages the workers movement. Only this way can people be won from the dead end of parliamentary politics" Just look at the spectacle of Starmer lauding the likes of Thatcher(an ardent churchill fan) and vowing to continue austerity. Isn't it sad Churchill could be taken as the figurehead of another workers party? Confining the minds of the people within the nationalist straitjacket will lead to a colossal defeat.

It's really interesting hearing about how many of these disparate lines of thought are linked to and in communication with each other. I think that the anti-colonial movement is, perhaps, the single most successful Marxist movement in history, and so it makes sense to resurrect and carry forward the ideologies, politics that animated it.

Tariq Ali - a great intellect, a vigorous mind, a fine writer - yet incapable of imagining the scale of depravity unleashed in Germany from the 1930s; incapable of grasping the complex moral compass that could rouse Britain, a population led by an understandably appeasing political class, to fight and die in another world war; incapable of seeing anything but the character of a 'cult' in the celebration and memorialisation of a political leader able to rouse a nation against National Socialism, and its allies, so soon after payment of the devastating butcher's bill of the Kaiser's War. The 1500+ comments on this UA-cam exemplify the way the internet shepherds its users into silos. I never had a chance to meet a good few of the ancestors who in a Europe without these two wars would have survived, albeit under a fascist imperium. They fought and died, not for Churchill, but for the freedoms we enjoy today - freedoms undervalued as Churchill's legacy is obscured by time and the half-truths of his detractors.

Blood and Oil, how Churchill lost the British Empire’s war against the Turks, Churchill urged his ex Daughter-in-law to marry Averell Harriman in 1942, the same year he was installed as a War time PM, Averell Harriman and Prescott Bush were both US Congress (Skull and Bones) members and Global Bankers who helped finance Hitler’s Chancellorship and the Nazis, a deal brokered by Montague Norman who controlled the Global Bank of England, he was also a member of the Rothschild family.

Marx's abolition of the family was in relation to the state the family was in under capitalism. Meaning the fractured entity of the whole family working in factories. His statement on the abolishing of the family was in reference to that exact state of the family, Not the family unit entirely. It makes absolute zero sense why a man who very vigorously championed the importance monogamy and had seven children to the same wife, would support a complete abolition of the family unit. Anarchists like Sophie Lewis, clearly have no right to fall back on Marxism when they themselves have zero understanding on him or his writings.

I really enjoyed the book. I study nature protection and in my philosophy seminar we talked about how we have to change the way we interact with nature a how we have to change the way we work in nature conversation. I think this is the way we have to go. Convivial Conservation will maybe be not the easy way but definitely the most sustainable.

This would be amazing. I unfortunately can't get my head that far up my a$$ to think this is what would happen. Definition of ignorance. Move to a communist country, stay there for a year or two. Come back and tell us how great it is and the freedom you had. Many close friends have fled these countries. They tell me of the beautiful housing, the food is plentiful, the laws and censorship are amazing. They loved waiting in lines for hours to maybe get groceries, they loved the convenience of not having multiple food items to pick from. The food rations were the best, oh and the promise of the government free money turning into forced labor was even better. They think the government is bad now lmao, give them complete power snd see how that goes. "Let's talk about what we want it to look like" free housing, food, transportation.

It's a fun larp, but where are they getting into the nuts and bolts of producing such energy as well as maintaining a competetive edge in world power. It's weird how leftists try to hide the ball in that they never address power because they benefit so greatly from the current power structure.

Edmund D. Morel on the likes of Churchill. To the Belligerent Governments By Edmund Dene Morel Wider and wider the spread of your devastations. Higher and higher the mountains of the dead - The dead because of you. All the wars and all the plagues were as nought To the madness of your doings. Like the breath of pestilence this madness sweeps Through the plains and valleys of Europe, Destroying in multitudes the children of men. What have the people done that you should treat them so? Have they not stocked your Treasuries? Have they not lacked that you might be filled? Have not great masses of them submissively endured poverty, squalor and want whilst you prated to them of Liberty and Equality, of Patriotism and Empire? In return, what have you done for the peoples? You have taught them a false ideal of nationalism Honour and national greatness. You have pumped fear into their hearts in Order to uphold that militarism you use to crush and drain them. Continuously, cynically, deliberately you have sacrificed them to your secret manoeuvres and sordid quarrels. Your armies, dead-locked in foul embrace, Sway backwards and forwards, advancing Here a little, there a little - but at immense cost. Baffled, you order the death and mutilation of multitudes; You rain death upon sleeping cities, you decree the slow starvation of Communities, you strew the floor of the sea with the bodies of the helpless. And the scribes and pharises you pay with this intent, dupe and mystify the people. Your hireling priests call upon the Deity to sanctify your deeds and nail once more the Christ upon the cross. Constantly, you seek to involve more peoples in the general ruin of which you are the architects From the uttermost ends of the earth, you Conduct fresh contingents to the slaughter, Men with brown skins and yellow; black men Of whom you you boasted a short while ago that you Had rescued them from barbarism. You sow the world with lies, with malice and with incharitableness. You ingerminate the cancer of unreason. You invent and trick, distort and vilify. Under your moulding, Humanity becomes misshapen, ghoulish, revolting. You murder the body, and purify the mind and were you able you would kill the soul. One and all you squandered the communally earned wealth of your peoples on engines of destruction. One and all you lied and plotted and spied Spun webs of intrigue, dug pits, laid traps Contrived ambushes for your neighbours. Gregers Brinch, [12/11/2023 21:45] One and all you betrayed your peoples Victory? What means this victory you proclaim to be your goal? The victory you seek is a victory which shall Perpetuate your empire over Mankind; keep Humanity bound in fetters to your cruel and senseless systems; Maintain your castles and your monopolies; strengthen your embargoes Upon the people’s liberties. They will be secure, you say, if you can crush, humiliate and dictate terms to your rivals, who - you falsely state - are their rivals. They will prosper, you say from the ruin of their neighbours All this is false and you know it is false! Because dictation, humiliation and crushing bring no security to those who inflict them, but only bring hatred and revenge against which the perpetrators must be forever on their guard. Thus your notion of “Victory” means for the peoples increased poverty and a renewal of fears and hatreds. For the peoples your Victory means Death. There is but one victory which can bring Salvation to the peoples and heal wounds which your disorderly ambitions and monumental selfishness have inflicted upon them; and which can create a fairer world for their descendants. That victory is the victory which shall prove, Finally and for all time, that warfare between Nations can achieve nothing but disaster and misery. It is the victory which shall precipitate a great awakening in the hearts and minds of men. It is the victory which shall turn the nations In loathing from you and your idols of Power and greed; which shall open to them the Road to peace and good will towards all men; Domination over none; cooperation and Partnership with all in the common tasks of social service which knows no frontiers; and in the concentration of human effort upon honourable rivalry in arts and crafts and all branches of constructive knowledge. It is the victory which out of this chaos of desolation will lead to Understanding. For none but you does that victory spell defeat. And so in praying that the kind of victory you one and all desire shall not be yours, we pray for the victory of justice over injustice, of truth over falsehood, of liberty of thraldom, of understanding over ignorance - that ignorance wherein lie the seeds of every sin against the light.

No, they fight, because they believe, that the Russians are half Asians.

Tariq is missing that Churchill evolved as person to become the defender of democracy and freedom in the world. To say he was the sum of his mistakes and Victorian upbringing is erroneous. We learn from our mistakes. If it wasn't for Churchill and his staunch opposition to Hitler, we might be living in a very different world today where Mr. Ali would have no voice at all and genocide is common place.

Anybody with any real knowledge of history knows Churchill was a monarchist imperialist belligerent warrior for fascist capitalist empire. Nothing speaks so clearly of it than his support for Franco.... He could really turn a word. Hitler and Stalin were an ominous overt threat and handed him his "finest hour". Churchill (not alone) killed millions for the crown. Very disappointing the western democracies didn't defend the elected government of Spain.
